Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the option to question particular rulings from the official, following the system currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
